CROSSFIT BLIND

There are ELEVEN boxes (and counting!) in and around the town where CrossFit Blind just opened!

We had a job to do, and that was to make CrossFit Blind STAND OUT, to make it distinctive, full of swagger and character, to make it the coolest and hippest of them all.

The work I did for CrossFit Blind was three parts--1) interior design, 2) website, and 3) graphic design including logo.

I love all my design projects, but when hands-on elements are involved, and especially when it's a MURAL(!!), it's honestly my favorite cake with the cherry on top!
These babies take A LOT of time, and sometimes feel more like labor than art, but if you wanna go out with a bang, murals are the way to go.

I LOVED doing this series for CrossFit Blind and enjoyed every moment of it, because the client basically said: Here are some walls, do whatever the F*CK you want with it!
Just among my absolute favorite of things! :)

STORY NO.1

PINK BRICKS!

"Make it Stand Out!"

A Pink Brick Wall!
During our initial tour of the space, I saw that there was a small part of the wall that was made of BRICK!

Brick walls are expensive to make, but here before us was this random exposed brick wall from the original construction of the building.

From the moment I saw it, I knew there was no way I was going to let it blend in; it was going to STAND OUT! We were going to make a statement out of it.

CrossFitters often take pictures of the score board, so it was the perfect place for that. I want to say that the black board was custom-made to fit the bricks, but it wasn't-my client just ordered the biggest one he could find, and tada! a match made in heaven!

"Let's DIY it"

We had a bit of difficulty searching for the right front desk for the space. Everything out there was basically way overpriced, at least USD 500 (KRW 500,000) or over, even for a tiny one.
Price was not the only problem. They were either too small, too long, not the right look, style, or functional use. The front desk we wanted was basically not out there!

So what do you do when you can't find what you envision, you DIY it!
We found an (very) old front desk that had been used at a comic book store probabaly for about 20 years. We got it off of the man for USD50 (KRW50,000), although when we received it via pick-up truck, we both looked at each other and thought "this piece of shit should've been free!" LOL

I got busy painting and upcycling away, and voila! the perfect desk for the space!
The small side table we found on the street was also upcycled in the same way, and here we have a complete reception area, and I just saved my client a little money!

You’re welcome :)

THE RIGHT RECEPTION DESK

"My Bar Brings

All the CrossFitters

From the Yard"

What kind of CrossFit box has it's own BAR????

Well this one does!!
CrossFit boxes in Seoul barely have a proper waiting area because of the square footage, but my client was adamant on a cafe or bar area on the premises.

There was a pillar fairly close to the entrance, so I decided to fence off the workout area from the waiting area/reception by creating a bar, connecting all the way from the wall to the pillar, leaving an opening on the other side of the pillar that leads into the workout space.

The bar was positioned to have members waiting for the next class, able to overlook into the workout area.

This would not only allow them to comfortably take a minute before entering their session, but also get that adrenaline flowing, by allowing them to take in all that visual of the space and people, breathing in the booming energy of the roaring atmosphere.

CrossFit is all about PUMPING IRON, so I knew we needed a metal feel to extend into the waiting area.
For the bar top, we used acacia wood, supported by metal legs, finishing with metal fence panels.

For the coffee table, I found a carpenter who was trying to do a quick sale of his inventory, and went and picked up one of his slabs. With a little bit of wood stain and some metal legs, the coffee table was ready!

For the chairs, I brought in those made of wood and metal to stay consistent with the theme.
